Exactly by Tim Woods – February 19

Come to 36 North’s next script-in-hand reading, Exactly, written by Tim Woods. Join us on Monday, February 19,  7:00 p.m. at Center Stage Theater.

Exactly begins with Edwin Booth, 75, pleading with the statue of his deceased great, great, grandfather, the 19th century’s pre-eminent actor and interpreter of Hamlet. Contemporary Edwin is a retired New York stage producer and director.

Edwin wants to die. Desperately. But the Dead Actor’s Bureau from the Beyond, keeps Edwin from his goal. Until he restores the fame of his famous patriarch, our 21st century Edwin cannot be allowed to die.

In walks an unknown playwright, a California Space-Cadet with no writing background or credits, seeking a producer and director. Briggs Stratton cannot see obstacles to his goal of getting his new play, Exactly, produced on the New York stage.

Reluctantly, Edwin finds himself taking on this hopeless project. Briggs sets out to cast his play and everyone he meets signs onto this absurd project.

Getting mixed up with a gang of grifters and con-men, Edwin finds himself working with people totally foreign to everything he’s done in the theater—who take him to places he’s never been.

The staged reading will be read by Frank Widman, Steve Capasso, Ali Eppy, Lilly Begovic, Jocelyn McMahon, Drew Crocker, and Scott Kravitz.

No reserved seats! First come, first served.

New Shorts by Steve Capasso

Join 36 North Playwrights’ Collective in a presentation of Four New Shorts written by Steve Capasso. The script in hand reading will be held at Actor’s Theater at 7:00 pm on Monday, June 26. Admission is FREE, though donations are happily welcomed. Refreshments will be served.

Waiting for Their Flight is an exercise in structure and style. I wanted to experiment using short stories, vignettes really, and the same actors to play different characters all within a ten minute piece.

Mystery Messiah was originally written about ten years ago and has gone from being a story about an angry man on death row haunted by the crime he committed to being a story about a man on death row who discovers an answer that leads him to forgiveness.

I had the most difficult time finding Lily’s voice as a hostage in bank robbery. It just about drove me crazy until I hit on the idea that maybe she’s the one who’s crazy.

Ghost Light – Love, relationship, and spirituality play out on an empty stage as a janitor tells the story of a man on death row and is haunted by his own past.

Railing by Wilma Marcus Chandler

36 North: A Playwrights’ Collective presents RAILING, by Wilma Marcus Chandler. This next in our series of developmental script-in-hand readings facilitates moving our works from page to stage and allow us to hear our new plays in front of audiences for the first time. RAILING will be minimally blocked, with few or no sets. As with our past shows, audiences are invited to give feedback after each evening’s presentation.

RAILING is written in a five-cycle, short-play format and takes inspiration from the classical Japanese Noh theatre, but addresses very American issues of family life and many of its tribulations. Featuring a cast of 12 actors and traditional klezmer music by Dan Phillips, it is followed by a Q&A with the audience. Chandler’s new work, recently published by Hummingbird Poetry Press, THE NIGHT BRIDGE, also takes much inspiration from classical Asian art.
